Choosing the Right Collection Agency

What do you do when choosing a collection agency?  What are you looking for? Many company’s do not take the time to research an agency when making the selection.

  1. See how many fines a company has from the state attorney general.
  2. Is the company charging you fees up front? (i.e. clerical fees, processing fees, etc) If so a good bit of advice is to run in the opposite direction.
  3. What is the commission rate they are charging you? Is it competitive with other agencies?
  4. Have you researched it with the Better Business Bureau?
  5. Who is involved in the day to day operations of the agency and are they available to speak with.
  6. Does the agency operate as an extension of your business and treat your clients/customers with the respect and dignity or are they yelling, screaming and cursing over the phone? How do you want your customers/clients treated?
  7. Do the follow the FDCPA? (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) From a legal standpoint they are required.
  8. Do they follow the TCPA? (Telephone Consumers Practices Act) Again they have to.
  9. Will they allow you to come take a tour of the agency?
  10. Will they give you a login so you can see what is happening on your accounts?
  11. How long have they been in business? A year or 2 or 30 plus years.
